Great Britain Locator Gazetteer Data

The 2011 update of Collins Bartholomew Great Britain Locator Gazetteer data includes some  60,000 places in Great Britain, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands extracted from the Collins Bartholomew 1:200,000 scale map database.  It includes some 35,000 settlements, 5,000 land and water features, 4,000 places of interest, 3,200 railway stations, 3,000 mountains/hills, 2,500 golf courses, 1,600 rivers, 1,250 road junctions and 1,000 lakes and lochs.

Each place is given a National Grid reference for a point location which refers to the designated centre of a settlement, the approximate centre of an areal feature (such as a lake), an arbitrary point along a line feature (such as a river), or the location of the name of a land or water feature.  In addition the longitude and latitude in decimal degrees is supplied.

Places are classified by county or unitary authority area (except in metropolitan areas) and by the postcode sector of the designated point location.  Locations of places of interest in particular may be subject to cartographic displacements, which can affect the accuracy of this classification.  Local authority data is current as at October 2011; postcode data is essentially current as at October 2011.

Data can be supplied in different ways as required by a customer.
Typical data distributions are made

• on CD-R (for PC or Mac use)
• on DVD-R (for PC or Mac use)
• by download from one of Graticule's cloud virtual private servers.

The Gazetteer file is available in a selected file formats, typically ASCII text Comma Separated Value ( CSV), Access (DBF) or ESRI Shape files, but others are available on request.
